A plastic waste menace and challenge in an urban poor area of Ashaiman, where heaps of refuse majorly of plastics were under constant burning with its attendant effects of severe heath hazards, aroused the ingenuity of Mr Sualla Ishaq and Mr Hafiz, who in some seven years ago, begun the collection and recycling of plastic waste in the Ashaiman enclave. This noble idea of solving the plastic waste menace in the Ashaiman enclave has seen to the employment of many hitherto unemployed youth, who now receive some form of income by going round and collecting these plastic waste for smart plastic recycle limited at a fee. The plastic waste supplied to the company undergoes sorting, washing, crushing and then finally recycled into plastic pellets, which is the precursor material for making othe plastic products like,polythene bags,etc. What was started by only two individuals has now grown into a fully fledged company, with a a total staff strength of sixty, comprising of thirty two females and twenty eight males. Besides this sixty staff strength, is the indirect jobs created for the thousands of youth who on a daily basis supply plastic waste to the company. This single initiative of Mr Sualla Ishaq and Mr Hafiz has brought about a cleaned environment and creation of jobs simultaneously,especially for the teaming youth,in and around the Ashaiman enclave and beyond. Smart plastic recycle limited continues to grow under able leadership of the ever dynamic chief executive officer, in the person of Mr Sualla Ishaq, whose future plans for the company is clearly defined. The company intend to move to households to collect their waste and pay them for the waste they generate, as long as these households are able to segregate their waste. During the process of recycling of the plastic waste ,a huge quantity of it end up as yet another unrecyclable waste. Here again Smart plastic recycle limited intend to establish a new department,that will transform the so-called waste into a brand new product of pavement blocks,which could be used in the construction and the housing sector. Smart plastic recycle limited is gradually positioning itself to be counted as one of the best companies in Ghana in the area of waste management and general environmental cleanliness, as well as a climate compliant company.

What is Plastic Recycling? It is the process of recovery of plastic waste and reprocessing them to create products that are functional and useful. The goal of plastic recycling is to eliminate plastic pollution by taking out plastics from the ocean and landfills as well as conserve resources in the process

Machine maintenance can include regularly scheduled service, routine checks, and both scheduled and emergency repairs. It also includes replacement or realignment of parts that are worn, damaged, or misaligned.
Volta Waste Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies have partnered with media houses in the volta region to create public awareness for the distribution of 1 million bins. Zoomlion Ghana limited and its regional subsidiaries are distributing waste bins under the “1 million Bin project” which is providing waste bins to households across the country to help collect those uncollected waste which end up at unauthorized places. Volta Waste is leading the charge in the 27 Municipal and District Assemblies in both Volta and Oti regions to ensure that households within its operational zones are provided with standard waste bins to store waste for collection. Mr. Solomon Denyo, General Manager of Volta Waste Limited explained that the intention of the project is to “trap every Waste that is generated from homes, offices, Churches and send them to the appropriate area for recycling to generate organic compose” He said the project apart from providing each household with a waste bin will also provide job opportunities for the youth within our communities. Mr. Denyo added an Integrated Recycling and Compost Plants (IRECOPs) have been constructed in the Volta and Oti regions respectively. “These plants will help produce organic compost to help feed the agricultural sector” He asked residents in the Volta and Oti regions to subscribe to the 1 million Bin project. The team visited the newly constructed Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant in the region to familiarize itself with how the plant operates.

Plastic recycling is the reprocessing of plastic waste into new products. When performed correctly, this can reduce dependence on landfill, conserve resources and protect the environment from plastic pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Although recycling rates are increasing, they lag behind those of other recoverable materials, such as aluminium, glass and paper. The global recycling rate in 2015 was 9%, while 12% was incinerated and the remaining 79% disposed of to landfill.
